Chapter 6

“Jan, glad I ran into you,” the sheriff said. “I wanted to discuss the Carlyle situation with you. Do you have a minute to step into my office? It’s a bit chilly out here.”

“Okay,” Jan answered tentatively. They walked in silence along the street until they got to the police station. Jan was encouraged to see that Ray led her to his office, not to the interrogation room. She sat down and waited while he spoke quietly with a constable at the door.

“Thanks, Jan,” he said, sitting down behind his desk. “I went and spoke to Mr. Carlyle’s children. They told me that he had gone back home for a bit and had asked them to wait for him. When I asked about the window and the things that had been on the table that you mentioned, they said that everything was being boxed up so they could put the cottage up for sale. They figured the broken window was just some kids. They said that nothing was missing. I asked for Mr. Carlyle’s phone number so I could speak with him, as the owner of the cottage, and they said that they would pass along the message and have him call me. He hasn’t. Do you know anything more?”

Jan was silent for a moment. It seemed that Carolyn hadn’t said anything to the sheriff. So, her decision was whether she should lie to him now. She decided to skirt the truth. “When I spoke with them, they asked me to keep out of it. They weren’t pleased that I had gotten you involved in the first place. They have asked me not to come back.”

“Didn’t I hear that one of the brothers is staying at The Elusive Cat?”

“Yes, the eldest, Ian. But he spends most of his time over at the cottage. I am still worried about Jonathan. He said nothing to me about going back to Philadelphia.”

“Okay. Well, just keep your eyes and ears open. There is something not right there. Maybe I’ll drop in again in a couple of days.” He stood up. “What are you doing in town, Jan?”

“Just some homework at the art store and picking up dinner.”

“Lois isn’t cooking tonight?”

“It’s not for Lois,” Jan blushed.

Ray laughed. “Enjoy yourselves. I’ll see you around. Say hi to Richard for me.”

Jan shook her head as she left. Small towns! Then she smiled. Carolyn may have to tell Ray something sometime. Ray may only be a small-town sheriff, but he was very good at his job. She just hoped he would forgive her when he found out the whole truth. She walked back to the restaurant and got their dinner. When she arrived at Richard’s place, she realized that she had beaten him there. She sat in the car, staying warm until his SUV pulled up beside her. She followed him to his front door with their dinner.

“Maybe it’s time I gave you a key,” Richard said. “Then you wouldn’t have to sit out in your car.”

“And I could water your plants and feed your animals when you are away,” Jan said with a smile.
